I have been the Subscriptions and Circulations manager since I joined the company in 1997, after working for one of the country's largest magazine publishers it was a refreshing change to work for a much more personal company where you felt your ideas and efforts were really appreciated.
My work revolves around controlling the busy subscriptions department which caters for all our magazines together with maintaining the ABC audited readership levels for our business titles, this requires a lot of hard work and resourcefulness, but it's good to know you have the support of a good team behind you and I feel quite proud of the results I have achieved.
Having headed up the production department for the past ten years, I have come up with two certainties in my life at Unity Media.
One. My work is never dull, whether scrambling to meet tight printing deadlines or liaising with advertising clients at the 11th hour.
And two. No matter how hectic the work gets, the people surrounding me are supportive and friendly enough to pull me through.
I've worked at Unity for eleven years. Do I enjoy my job? I think the opening sentence speaks for itself!
I joined the accounts department in 1996 and worked as the Credit Controller for two years, I was then given the opportunity to try my hand at something new and I became the Sales Ledger Assistant dealing with the invoicing for the advertisements within our range of publications.
I am now Assistant Finance Manager and have stretched myself to running the Sales and Purchase Ledgers and helping the Finance Manager to prepare the basics for the monthly Management Accounts.
I enjoy the diversity and challenge of my role and am grateful for the support I have received and skills I have acquired since I started.
At Unity, I am given the freedom to manage my magazine as I see fit - there are no unnecessary managers standing between me and what I think is good for GGP . But if things get tough, or if I need support to get something done, then I know I can get a decision straightaway. Unity is also a great place to work. At previous jobs I used to hate that 'Sunday night' feeling when I used to count down the hours to Monday morning - not at Unity. There is no-one breathing down your neck making your life difficult, and people will always go out of their way to help you.
This is the second time round for me at Unity Media. I first worked for the company in 1991 as the company secretary, when there were just eight of us! I quickly progressed as did the company and took on roles in production and sales, and was given the chance as Advertising Manager on Performance Ford magazine. After six years with Unity I took a break and travelled overseas, returning in 2003 to take on a brand new magazine that Unity had launched – GT Purely Porsche. I couldn’t believe how quickly Unity had developed, the motoring division alone had eight fantastic magazines. My magazine team are great, and with three years hard work GT Purely Porsche has gone from strength to strength.
I thoroughly enjoy my job…Unity Media is a fun place to work!
I'd wanted to be a motoring journalist since I was a kid, but soon realised what a competitive field it was. Unity was prepared to me give a chance and I've never looked back. It's the kind of company that says "If you want responsibility, take it: show us what you can do". Display the right attitude and you're rewarded with opportunities. It's a real buzz to see my ideas and input shaping the finished product on the newsagent's shelves.
There's no getting bogged down in middle management bureaucracy, either: whether I am dealing with my team, the publisher or even the Chairman, I know I can have my say and that my input will be appreciated.
I've helped create new magazines and relaunch established titles - and none bigger than the launch of Performance Car. Every day is a new challenge. My job ranges from dealing with readers queries to organising photo shoots in Europe, from liaising with PR teams to road testing the latest sports cars. I enjoy the youthful dynamism of our office environment and the freedom to mould my role to suit my talents.
Working across all nine consumer magazines and keeping other projects in-house there is never a dull moment here at Unity.
The design department is highly creative and along with motivating each other we create up to the moment layouts with the aid of the latest software packages.
Although the work is demanding it never stops being fun which is the whole ethos of Unity Media.
Having worked in the reprographic and publishing industry for the last 18 years, I was given the chance in November 2003 to set up a reprographic department within the halls of Unity Media plc - a golden opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up. Now nearly two and a half years later, my department is fully established with a highly skilled and highly productive team. With the latest software and fastest hardware, we originate all 20 Unity Media titles. These include nine consumer - with the new launch 'Retro Ford' - and various B2B titles ranging from monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly and annual publications.
Working closely alongside the other Unity departments allows for speed of processing, fast communication and positive input from both the reprographic and publishing sides of Unity Media.
The chairman and publisher have a 'never miss an opportunity' attitude which has allowed me to create this department making Unity Media safe and self-sufficient within the world of origination, the end result - a department to be proud of.
